SB585 Cow Palace Gun Show Ban

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

I am writing to urge you to VETO SB585.

I am a retired Forensic Chemist who dealt with many criminal cases and has Expert knowledge of criminals and crime; a law like this will do nothing to reduce crime, but will effect the average good citizen and thereby lessen his respect for all laws. Firearm sales are already heavily regulated, particularly at gun shows such as occur at the Cow Palace; NO EVIDENCE EXISTS OF ANY ILLEGAL TRANSACTIONS HAVING OCCURRED HERE, nor has any other problem ever surfaced.

Besides reducing revenue which supports the Cow Palace and the State (which the State can hardly afford to lose), venues like this also benefit the dedicated Police officers who try to maintain their highest level of proficiency with their weapons through extra practice at private ranges; we both recall the bank shootout in San Francisco some years ago, where hundreds of shots were fired but NOBODY was hit, luckily including no bystanders. 

The 'rank and file' Police Officers know this law is counterproductive; only the top 'Politicians' in the departments support it, and only for political reasons.

The best real academic research shows that a properly trained, armed citizenry is the best deterrence to crime. Laws like this are contrary to the good of the People and the State.
