AB 1471 Microstamping Sample Letter

Dear Committee on Public Safety Members (or more effectively: Dear Assemblymember name_goes_here)

As a citizen of California, I am writing today to ask you to vote against the Crime Gun Identification Act (AB 1471).

The Crime Gun Identification Act would require that an unproven technology be used in pistols in hopes of allowing police to match bullet shells found at a crime scene to the handgun that fired the bullets.

If indeed the technology could be made to work, crime scenes could easily be contaminated by a criminal throwing down a handful of shell casings he picked up from the local gun range. Many law-abiding people would have their self-defense weapons confiscated and even be subjected to jail until they could prove they were nowhere the crime scene. Many police officers would also be brought into suspicion when their pistol’s shell casings show up at the scene of a murder.

This technology, known as "microstamping" would become a severe financial liability to all police departments and the already over-burdened court system, especially with the inevitable false arrest and imprisonment lawsuits.

As was shown by the recent Virginia Tech mass shooting, criminals will not follow any gun laws. Although, this murderer had legally purchased the two weapons, he committed a Federal felony by filing off the serial numbers. He could have also easily obliterated the microstamping with a simple emery board commonly used for nail manicures. Although Virginia is a state that allows its citizens to carry concealed weapons for self defense, the state legislature passed laws prohibiting firearms on campus. This murderer broke the state law as soon as he carried the guns on to campus. Finally, this criminal broke a most important law: “Thou shall not murder”.

Please vote against AB 1471.

Sincerely,
